If it isn’t one hotel chain, it’s another – this time Hilton Hotels has been hit by Malware.
The Hilton East Midlands Airport, Image Economy Class and Beyond (amazingly, I don’t have that much Hilton stock photography to hand. This is what happens when you don’t stay at Hiltons…).
It seems Hilton Hotels were hit over two periods
- from 18th November to 5th December 2014
- from 21st April 21 to July 27, 2015
The malware hit point of sale devices at Hilton Hotels. Sadly, no list is avalible of locations where the malware did hit (unlike Starwood who published a list).
Data that has been compromised by the malware attack includes:
- Cardholder names
- Payment card numbers
- Security codes
- Expiration dates
Thankfully, no address data, PIN numbers and Hilton HHonors data has been compromised.
It goes without saying – check your statements for unauthorised transactions. Now might also be a good time to contact your card provider and request a new card with a different number too.
Hilton are offering one year of free credit monitoring for those who need it.
The full apology from Hilton is at hiltonworldwide.com/guestupdate with an FAQ at http://news.hiltonworldwide.com/index.cfm/misc/guestupdate/frequently-asked-questions.
It’s still disappointing to see hotels being hit like this with malware attacks, when (and speaking as an IT Professional), there seems to some information security being carried out – but not to the extent that it needs to be to prevent outbreaks and data syphoning like this.
Hopefully Hilton will take some hard lessons from this, and strengthen their defences against attacks like this.
