In what is the joke when it comes to infrastructure in the United Kingdom – where it seems governments are afraid to make a decision that might annoy people – there’s been an update on the new runway to be built for a London Airport.
Heathrow Airport from the air – Image Economy Class and Beyond.
And the decision is… to do an environmental impact report according to sources who have been talking to the BBC.
So with an environmental impact report to see what will happen if they build the new runway there – Gatwick comes back into play as it wants to get a new runway.
Of course, the logical thing would be to expand both airports, but that’s besides the point. Who needs infrastructure when you can have a good old argument.
Politically – it’s not a bad idea for the Prime Minister David Cameron who in 2009 promised no to Heathrow expansion. In addition, the Mayor of London election will be done and dusted at that time too.
A formal decision is expected Thursday.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister said a decision would be reached by the end of the year. It seems that his decision is to put it off for another six months.
Sadly, as the Her Majesties Government dithers around on more reports, it keeps residents, businesses and travellers in suspense.
Even though the Government is sitting on a report that says “expand airports” (as I covered in June)
And they wonder why people from the regions of the United Kingdom have already given up on Heathrow, and instead head to the hubs of Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha.
Still, if it avoids difficult questions being answered by a government minster, that must be fine.
Even if the United Kingdom suffers in the meantime.
