Heathrow Express and Gatwick Express closures ahead for Christmas and New Year

16/12/2015 by Kevincm

It’s coming to that time of the year where we’re meant to be festive and jolly. Alas, if you’re planning to take the train over the Christmas holiday you could be out of luck as the railway lines will be suffering closures for engineering work.

For the international audience who are coming or going to London’s major airports – you will be affected by these closures.

Heathrow Express – https://www.heathrowexpress.com/timetable-schedule/service-plans

  • Gatwick Express will be suspended from 22:00 Thursday 24 December 2015 until 04:00 Monday 4 January 2016. No services will run.
  • Southern will operate two services an hour to/from Victoria and Gatwick via Horsham, taking 90 minutes
  • Alternatively, Southern will operate two trains an hour from Victoria to East Grinstead, and then a replacement bus service between East Grinstead and Gatwick Airport. This will be the only option on the 26th December.

Nothing says “Merry Christmas” more than rail line closures.

For the rest of the UK Network there is major disruption expected – especially on these routes and areas :

  • London Liverpool Street
  • Doncaster area / Cleethorpes – Doncaster / Newark North Gate
  • Crewe – Stafford
  • London Cannon Street / Charing Cross
  • London Paddington – Reading (Crossrail)
  • London – Brighton

Keep an eye on  http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/108569.aspx?nreTrack=Christmas to see what changes are coming up.

And allow extra time for your journeys.

So any recommendations for the best way to get into London from Heathrow with the rail lines closed?

Coach (25th) and Tube (26th and 27th) are the only realistic options.
