The first of the ten-strong fleet will join Virgin America from March 2017, with deliveries through to 2018. The airline currently operate Airbus A319s and A320s family aircraft in its fleet already, so an A321 is a natural fit for the airline.
Virgin America will operate their A321neos with 185 total seats – the exact breakdown hasn’t been revealed yet. The airline currently operate their Airbus A320s either in a 146 seat configuration or a 149 seat layout.
The uses of an A321 are great – be it from a slot constrained airport, or moving a lot of passengers at a lower cost – and cost is everything no matter what any airline PR says.
Combined with the fuel savings the A321neo will offer compared to the existing A320ceo family aircraft, these should be a boon to the Virgin America fleet.
