30% Bonus on Buying Avios

07/03/2016 by Kevincm

British Airways are running an offer on buying extra Avios (the currency of the British Airways Executive Club programme), with up to 30% bonus if you’re in the mood to buy points – rather than earning them via flying or credit card spend.

The bonuses are on offer if you wish to buy points for yourself, or gift them to someone else.

Bonuses are tired as follows:

  • 10% bonus when you purchase or gift 1,000 – 15,000 Avios
  • 20% bonus when you purchase or gift 16,000 – 34,000 Avios
  • 30% bonus when you purchase or gift 35,000 Avios

Purchases must be made by 17th March 2016 to get the bonuses. Bonuses are added onto your accounts at time of purchase.

Terms and Conditions apply to the purchases – but mainly that you are capped at buying/gifting 35,000 Avios per year

But how much do you actually need to spend to get these bonuses?

Let’s do some mathematics – a subject I failed in miserably at GCSE level. That’s why some of use spreadsheets and went into IT support.

A quick play, and here are the numbers I got from the British Airways site (powered by points.com)

At the cheaper levels, it’s almost 3p an Avios – that’s expensive (and you’d be better off spending the money on an airplane ticket). Even at 1.26p per Avios, it isn’t the best offer I’ve seen in a while.

However, if you need to top up your account for a special redemption – this could be a chance to snag a few extra Avios whilst you get them.

I do warn against however buying Avios or miles for speculative purchases in the future. We all know the value of miles and points goes down as well as down – mainly due to companies choosing to revalue their frequent flyer programmes…

… and there hasn’t been a major re-valuing of the Avios programme for some time.
