As passenger demand reshapes the network maps, routes come and go. Sadly, for Austrian Airlines this means yet another long haul route is up for the chop – with Austrian to suspend operations to Tokyo Narita.

Austrian Airlines currently operate a daily service between Vienna and Tokyo Narita as OS051/OS052 with a Boeing 777-200ER.
The service is due to be suspended on 4th September 2016 – conveniently, the airlines new service from Vienna to Hong Kong will commence service on the 5th September 2016.
For those who want to connect with Star Alliance to Tokyo from Vienna, you will need to head to Frankfurt or Munich and connect with either Lufthansa or All Nippon Airlines to take you onwards to your ultimate destination.
It’s never welcome when routes are suspended or axed, but if an airline can’t make money on a route – there’s little logic to keeping it.
At least there are other options.

Too much competition from Japan to EU.
OS also is very very very tight with companion rules on flights so they kind of screwed themselves.
Love the airline and service but they need to loosen up a lot more to compete.
