One hotel has had enough of lycra running/cycling shorts in New Zealand – so much as to ban them entirely.
No Lycra Cycle shorts welcome – Image, Economy Class and Beyond (Editors note – I had to go to Lidl to shoot this photo. I’m not proud).
According to The Guardian The Plough Hotel in Rangiora has put a sign up stating:
“The bicycle is a beautiful object but they should never have invented lycra! No lycra shorts allowed please.”
Lycra shorts themselves are probably not the problem. It’s the contents within those shorts that are probably the problem and how they present themselves to the public at large.
The owner – Mike Saunders – said to Stuff.co.nz:
“It’s just a little unsuitable, we don’t always want to see any unsightly bumps and bulges,”
“We get a nice group of customers out here, some elderly folk . . . when you’re trying to concentrate on your breakfast you just want to see the sausages on your plate.”
Cycle shorts have their purposes for when you’re riding… but at breakfast, there are probably other things you need to focus on that tight lycra everywhere.
My Advice… keep a pair of baggy shorts in your cycle backpack. Whilst Lycra is good for riding with its clinglyness to help aerodynamics, it’s not a great look afterwards when you pop to the shops… 😉

Haha. But big $$$s in skimpy women’s tops are fine to them most likely!
