It seems British Airways (as well as Iberia Plus) is having a sale again, where they are selling Avios with up to a 40% bonus.
You can purchase 100,000 Avios in this sale (more than the usual 35,000 Avios purchasable per year) and still get bonuses.
This sounds good… but is it?
Looking at the sale – there it is a straight 40% bonus on top over normal purchases – so any purchase of 1,000 Avios or above will get the bonus amounts.
Let’s look at some numbers:
- 1,000 + 400 Bonus Avois = £31
- 10,000 + 4,000 Bonus Avios = £175.00
- 20,000 + 8,000 Bonus Avios = £335.00
- 30,000 + 12,000 Bonus Avios = £495.00
- 35,000 + 14,000 Bonus Avios = £575.00 (Usual limit)
Normally, you are allowed to buy up to 35,000 Avios per year. Now let’s head into the eye watering territories to get the bigger bonuses.
- 50,000 + 20,000 Bonus Avios = £815
- 75,000 + 30,000 Bonus Avios = £1,215.00
- 100,000 + 40,000 Bonus Avios = £1,615.00
That’s a lot of real money for a frequent flyer points.
The sale ends on the 26th May, whilst the Iberia sale ends on the 29th May.
As usual with these sort of sales, its important to have an objective in mind, rather than buying miles for the sake of have the miles.
Sometimes buying a lower amount of miles in these conditions is a great thing – as you will hit the target you need for redeeming without any more fiddly Avios collecting.
How you use the sale is as always – up to you. I’m never keen on buying miles or points (I still prefer to fly or earn them with a credit card), but this could be a chance to top up your accounts for that dream redemption.
Just make sure the flights are available before you buy the points…
