It’s coming up to the Late Spring Bank Holiday. Of course there’s engineering works.. and trouble in France!

A lot of people (your writer included) are counting the minutes to 5pm today, as it marks the start of the Late Spring Bank Holiday.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bank Holiday if there weren’t major rail works going on. And unsurprisingly – there are some pretty major works.

Firstly, Heathrow Express, Heathrow Connect, Gatwick Express, Stansted Express are all operating services (although there will be some reductions in service), allowing those who are going to and from the airports to connect with the capital.

Transport for London is running a normal service, with part closures on the District Line, TfL Rail and London Overground

Meanwhile, beyond London, there are some major changes:

  • Amended service to and from London Kings Cross / Moorgate
  • No trains to or from London Charing Cross / London Cannon Street
  • No trains to or from London Liverpool Street via Shenfield (Sunday 29 and Monday 30 May)
  • Buses replace trains between Bristol and Gloucester / Newport / Severn Beach
  • Amended service in the Crewe area
  • No trains between Lancaster / Carlisle and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

As usual check National Rail Enquiries before you travel to get the latest timetables and travel advice.

A special note about France.

For those of you heading across the Channel to France (or crossing over Europe into France) with your cars – ensure your petrol/diesel tanks are topped up. Strikes that are affecting access to fuel supplies are hitting France hard.

Note you cannot take extra fuel in jerry cans aboard Le Shuttle or any ferry service. As such – plan accordingly.

France is going through a wave of industrial disputes over changed to labour laws, and some services are impacted (and I swear there’s another ATC strike on the way soon).

Happy Bank Holiday everyone!
