It’s been everywhere when you travel on London Transport – the offering of using a Contactless Payment Card (such as a Contactless Visa/Mastercard/American Express) instead of using Transport for London’s own Oyster Product.
My trusty TfL Oyster Card… but is it an expensive for what it is? – Image, Economy Class and Beyond
But is it cheaper to use one than the other? The publicity says it is… but is it?
The Londonist investigated… and you’ll be surprised by the result:
On a particular set of trips they did, on Contactless Payment, they paid £9.50…

Whilst Oyster Card they paid the higher £11.80 day cap for Zone 1 to 6.

That’s still a big difference no matter how you cut it.
Of course, this is just one example. When in London, I tend to stick to Zone 1 to 3 travel, and with the frequency of journeys I can do, so I hit the capping limit rather early (depending on the mode of transport I use).
None the less – food for thought – especially if you’re using Transport for London services in a specific way.
Of course, both contactless payment methods and Oyster Cards beat paper tickets hands down when travelling around London.
Certainly, it’s making me think again when it comes to travelling in London.
