Emirates introduce interactive amentiy kits….

19/07/2016 by Kevincm

Emirates have tried to change the game of amenity kits again – this time making them “interactive”.

It seems with Pokemon Go taking the augmented reality thing to the next level, Emirates are trying at the same. time with their new amenity kits.

Here’s the pictures.

The amenity kit has an interactive element too (this is the augmented reality section), that allows you to unlock content.

To do this, you’ll need to download some extra software – Blippar (for iOS and Android). If you’re going to do this, do this before you depart as the download speeds aboard Emirate’s fleet isn’t exactly…. fast.

Doing this will allow you to explore content once you’ve scanned the kit – exploring activities and health tips for what Emirates describe as “a more comfortable and relaxing travel experience”.

The content will be refreshed every six months, so non-regular travellers will get to see new content when they travel

As for the amenity kit? It contains some of the essentials – namely, eye masks, socks, toothbrush & toothpaste and ear plugs. Which is more than you’ll see on some airlines offer for mid to long haul segments. This is wrapped up in a pouch  made of Neoprene material. The idea is that once you’ve flow, you can re-use the amenity kit bag.

But is the augmented reality part of this needed? I can see the need for the contents of an amenity kit (and I’ve lost count of the amount of times I wish I had a pair of amenity kit socks or a blindfold to hand), but the augmented reality product… I can see a very low uptake.

Sadly, if users do try to use this on a plane – they’ll be in for a very slow experience due to the limited bandwidth available on a plane.. and that’s if the content ever loads.
