Singapore Airlines loves updating its airline map, and with yesterday’s announcement, it adds a new fifth freedom route between Manchester in the United Kingdom with Houston in Texas.

It’s a cascade of changes, so let’s work through them one by one.
Singapore to Manchester will be change from a 1-stop service in Munch, to a direct service operating five times a week. All services then go on to Houston via Manchester. These will operate as SQ51/S52.
Planned operation looks a bit like this:
SQ052 DEPART SIN 02:35 ARRIVE MAN 09:00 DEPART MAN 10:15 ARRIVE IAH 14:35 SQ051 DEPART IAH 19:15 ARRIVE MAN 10:05+1 DEPART MAN 11:35+1 ARRIVE SIN 08:20+2 Commences: 30th October 2016 Booked Equipment: Boeing 777-300ER (Three Class) Operates Tuesdays, Wednesdays Fridays, Saturday and Sundays. Data: AirlineRoute
The service will be operated by a three-class Boeing 777-300ER, with First, Business and Economy seating.
The Singapore to Houston via Moscow Domodedovo service will be scrubbed, and instead operate between Singapore and Moscow Domodedovo only. This service will be reduced to four times per week instead of five.
SQ362/SQ361 will take the route, operating four times a week with a three-class Boeing 777-300ER.
Meanwhile, the Singapore – Munich – Manchester route will be curtailed, and operate between Singapore and Munich on a daily basis.
Let’s not beat about the bush – this is a big win for Manchester Airport as it continues to grow and be largest airport operation outside the London catchment area. By adding another direct connection to the Far East, and another to the USA in one fell swoop – it should drive passenger traffic at the airport.
It adds a brand new destination out of Manchester (currently not served by any airline), with interesting possibilities for those who ply oil – with an easy connection onto FlyBe flights for the Scotland.
This could be a route to watch in the medium to long-term.

Moscow is not typically considered the “Far East.” Perhaps you meant Eastern Europe?

Looking forward to seeing VS launch A333s to Boston from Manchester in 2017. Boston already has outpaced the capacity of its international terminal thanks to new services just st this year from Qatar, Eurowings,Thomas Cook, and Norwegian plus double-daily for the first time from Swiss. The A380 gates (three of them) will be complete in 2017, with BA stealing EKs Thunder by debuting the beast first. With a long-standing history in Boston, BA ought to have this notable event to itself. EK, to no one’s surprise, will bring their A380 to Boston soon after BA does.
