At Economy Class and Beyond, I like London City Airport… a lot. It’s sheer convenience and friendliness has always struck me how an airport should be run.
Well, London City Airport got some good news today, with its plans to expand green-lighted.

The expansion plan calls for:
- Seven new aircraft stands (More stands = more plane parking at peak times)
- A Parallel taxiway (something that is desperately needed – as currently aircraft have to taxi down the runway, turn then take off)
- Passenger Terminal Extended
This should allow London City Airport to add a 32,000 extra flights by 2025 and hopefully open up capacity – as well as extra destinations.
The programme will cost a £344 million – which will be met privately.
Declan Collier, CEO 0f London City Airport is extremely happy, stating:
“Today, the new Government has shown it is ready to act in the best interests of the British economy. Expansion at London City Airport will create more than 2,000 new jobs in East London, add much-needed aviation capacity in the South East, and generate an additional £750m per year for the UK economy. As the airport serving by far the highest proportion of business travellers in the UK (52%), who do some £11bn of trade in Europe annually, today the Government has sent a strong message that London and the UK are very much open for business. I welcome the decision and look forward to delivering new airport capacity for the South East by 2019.”
The expansion was held up due to to the previous Mayor of London – Boris Johnson – objecting to the expansion. The current mayor – Sadiq Khan – lifted the objection, allowing the UK Government to allow the expansion.
Meanwhile Heathrow and Gatwick Airports are waiting to be given a green light to expand.
Whilst London City Airport may grow – hopefully, it will keep its business focused and keep its friendliness.
