  • And the knockout blow goes to…

Heading into the terminal, it was a matter of heading down some steps, towards the jetway, then up some steps into the terminal building. Gate 1 allows access to an exit point that is beyond UK Border control – and I followed the signs past baggage reclaim to the exit .

Birmingham Airport
Of we go!

Bypassing UK Immigration to the arrivals area.

Baggage reclaim.

As I had no luggage, I headed straight for the exit.

This way please…

Maybe sometime in the future KLM…

Once in the public area, I began the short hike back to the Air Train – whilst the main terminal itself was dead.
Birmingham Airport
Shh. Just us arriving passengers here now.

Of course, when I got to the Airtrain, people were queuing… as no one had pressed the button to demand a service (beyond 8pm at night, the Air train system goes semi-manual).

Birmingham Airport
Top tip. Press the button to call an AirTrain. Rather simple….

I boarded it for the short ride over to train station, and then down to the platform.

Thankfully, the timing gods were with me – as a Virgin Trains service to Wolverhampton turned up. This would be helpful, as the first stop was Birmingham New Street.

Virgin Pendolino
Arriving Pendolino.

I settled in for the short trip back to New Street – which had a mix of day trippers and sleepers on the train.

Virgin Pendolino
Shhh….

Eventually, the train arrived at New Street station.

Birmingham New Street
Through the barrier and onwards.

I headed out of the station – and up the hill to Colmore Row, where there was a bus that was going in the vague direction of home.

Bus home
Nothing says welcome home than a National Express bus that needs a good clean.

The bus took me on the final part of this journey – the short distance home.

And after a busy 16 hours of watching planes and flying on them  – I was at my front door – the end of a fun day trip.

Home
Ah. Home sweet home.

Next: The Knock Out Blow goes to…
