Diamond Club prepares to shutter its doors – Time to look for a new credit card….

01/09/2016 by Kevincm

For those of us who still have BMI Diamond Card Credit Cards, the end is nigh.

British Airways sent out a communication yesterday… and it bodes ill for those who collect Avios via the old BMI Diamond Club Credit cards. Here it is its full glory:

Diamond Club Closure

And also on the Diamond Club Website

Diamond Club

The text:

We are sorry to inform you that the Diamond Club will be closing on 30 November 2016.

Please be assured that up until this date, you can still use your 10% discount on British Airways flights.

If you have a Diamond Club Credit Card issued by MBNA Limited, you will no longer be able to collect Destinations miles from 30 September 2016, however you will be able to convert them in to Avios using the Combine My Avios tool when you log in to your Executive Club account. You will need to do this by 30 November 2016, otherwise your miles will not be transferred and will expire.

For those who collect Avios via Diamond Club, you’re going to have to find a new way (either via the LLoyds Bank Avios Credit Cards,  TSB Avios Credit Card or the British Airways American Express range of credit cards).

Head for Points has better coverage on these cards than I could ever write about them (least of all… I hardly write about cards these days) including a list of the possible options for you to choose from if you’re looking to earn Avios via credit cards.

But for those of us who used to fly British Midland, it’s one of the final signs of life of the airline. Of course – there have been many mad ways to get miles from Diamond Club in the years (I remember buying 99p copies of the highway code to get a shopping portal bonus, subscriptions to the Economist

What are my strategies in the final month:

  • I have some British Airways bookings to make. I’ll be utilising my 10% discount
  • I’ll be transferring my point balances over as soon as they’re deposited from the credit card company.
  • And pretty much on the 30th September, I’ll be cutting up my MBNA Diamond Club Card and looking for a replacement.

And if anyone says Chase Sapphire as a replacement, they’ll get a free lump on the head…because as a UK resident –

WE DON’T GET CHASE CREDIT CARDS.

Nor the massive referral bonuses. Or signup bonuses. So neener neener.

Ahem. 😉
