Ryanair calls for new runways… at all London Airports

05/09/2016 by Kevincm

You’ve got to admit – Ryanair’s CEO – Michael O’Leary does make give some interesting press quotes.

And of course, by intresting – I mean sometimes downright outlandish.

However, the latest call by Michael O’Leary goes along a thought I’ve had since the argument over building a 3rd Runway at Heathrow or Gatwick kicked off – and that’s to build a runway at London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

Yes – three new runways.

The quote goes as follows:

Ryanair calls on the new UK Government to be radical in its decision making on new runways for London instead of picking just one (Heathrow or Gatwick) and calls on Prime Minister Theresa May to approve 3 new runways – one each at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, which will finally resolve the runway capacity issue for the next 50 years, while ensuring competition between airports delivers efficient facilities and prevents airlines and passengers being ripped off by gold-plated monopoly runways.

It’s a bold move – and one that I agree with to be honest. Rather than place our eggs in one basket, let’s give all three airports the chance to flourish and expand to serve London and the South Eastern regional needs?

Has this got a cat in hell chance in happening? Sadly, I don’t think the UK Government has the iron will do this… why?

  • The Government is still reeling and working out what to do next after the decision by 52% of the population to leave the European Union. To say it has a lack of policy for just about… anything
  • The Government has successfully managed to push back a decision on runway expansion in the South East of England for.. well, I’ve lost count to be honest now. At least 3 election cycles come to mind.
  • Environmentalists have vented their anger of one extra runway… let alone three.
  • and of course the NIMBY’s (Not In My Back Yard) who are happy for development – as long as it isn’t in their back yard.

The bottom line: We might get a 3rd runway at Heathrow, or a 2nd runway at Gatwick. When, is another matter.

As for the expansion that Michael O’Leary is suggesting… I guess it will never happen – unless the iron will to see it through exists.

And I can’t see that happening.

Oh. I mentioned Michael O’Leary’s outlandish comments. Here’s one that makes me squirm. (Slightly NSFW).

Gotta love O’Leary for a press quote…
