In Thailand? Please use common sense at this sensitive time.

Events in Thailand are moving fast with the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej at the age of 89.

As the country reels from the loss of its King, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated its travel advice to the country:

Following the official announcement of the death of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej there is now an official period of mourning of one year from 14 October 2016; you should respect the feelings and sensitivities of the Thai people at this time; access to entertainment, including restaurants, bars, and shopping areas may be restricted and you should behave respectfully when in public areas; if possible, wear sombre and respectful clothing when in public; check local media regularly and follow the advice of the local authorities

It goes without saying at this time to be careful and act respectfully at this time.

Thailand has rather strict lese majeste laws to protect the Thai Royal family from insult and threat.  Section 112 of Thai Criminal Code currently reads as follows:

“Whoever defames, insults or threatens the King, the Queen, the Heir-apparent or the Regent, shall be punished with imprisonment of three to fifteen years.”

Please exercise care if you’re in Thailand during this time – and keep up with local news to find out if you need to make changes to your plans whilst in the country.
