Qantas earmarks LA for its first Dreamliner Route

12/12/2016 by Kevincm

With all the excitement of a 17 hour non stop flight annouced on Sunday, Qantas has also released its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated route today

And it’s going to be Melbourne to Los Angeles

Qantas will use their Boeing 787-9 between Melbourne and Los Angeles, with the inaugural planned for the 15th December 2017

The service will be configured in a three class layout (Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class), with a total of 236 seats aboard.

The use of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will remove the exist Boeing 747-400, and will operate alongside the Airbus A380.

The exact split of seats has not been discussed – although we have a seat count now. I’m still working along the following lines of:

  • Business Class will be 1-2-1 (Based on most international business class deployments)
  • Premium Economy will be 2-3-2 (Based on the few Premium Economies out there)
  • Economy Class will be 3-3-3 (Because everyone bar one airline has stuck in 3-3-3 seating down the back)

This is based on previous airlines deployments and how they have configured their products.

Qantas International CEO Gareth Evans seems happy about the launch stating:

“In Economy there’s more room and plenty of storage. In Business, our suites will offer a fully flat bed and direct aisle access. We’ll be unveiling our Premium Economy in the first quarter of next year and it will set new standards for the industry.”

With the launch of a new Premium Economy product – this makes the plane slightly more appealing to look out for. However, the seat width is still going to be tight on a Boeing 787 in economy class.

For those who are excited being crammed into small seats, fares will be on sale from Christmas Day 2016 for those who want to fly a Qantas Dreamliner. For everyone else… there’s a service with an A380 with wider seats in Economy Class, and more space in the air in other classes

Just saying…
