Japan Airlines add Haneda to New York JFK

19/01/2017 by Kevincm

Japan Airlines is playing around with its route map, with the airline to add a service, whilst taking away a service to New York JFK.

First up is a new service, connecting Tokyo Haneda to New York JFK. This will start on the 1st April 2017, operating a morning service from Haneda to the USA, returning as an early evening arrival at Tokyo Haneda.

JL006 DEPART HND 10:40 ARRIVE JFK 10:35
JL005 DEPART JFK 13:10 ARRIVE HND 16:25+1

Commences: 1st April 2017
Booked Equipment: Boeing 777-300ER with SS7 Cabin
Data: JAL

However, with the addition of a morning service from Haneda, a service will be dropped from Tokyo Narita to JFK. The other service will be uprated to a Boeing 777-300ER, which will provision the evening service from the Tokyo area to JFK.

JL004 DEPART NRT 18:25 ARRIVE JFK 18:20
JL005 DEPART JFK 11:30 ARRIVE NRT 14:40+1

Commences: 1st April 2017
Booked Equipment: Boeing 777-300ER
Data: JAL

Both services will feature Japan Airlines Sky Suite 7 – which are presented in a four class formation (First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class). These are configured as:

  • 8 First Suites in a 1-2-1 formation
  • 49 Business Class Suites in a 2-3-2 formation
  • 42 Premium Economy Seats in a 2-4-2 formation
  • 147 Economy Seats in a 3-3-3 formation

Whilst there are plenty of niceties for the premium passenger (have a look at the JAL site), I spied something interesting – and that’s probably one of the roomiest economy class seats in the sky – with a 34″ seat pitch and a 19″ seat width.

That’s a very comfortable place to be when stuck in the sky for the long haul trip between Japan and the USA.

Now if only other airlines followed that lead, rather than cramming everyone in down the back of the plane…

Narita keeps losing service to Haneda, which now has more service to Europe and Asia, and it looks like North American routes are headed that way, too. One wonders what Narita will look like in 10-20 years.
