The battle for Frankfurt: Wizz Air joins the party

20/02/2017 by Kevincm

It seems the battle for Frankfurt Airport is starting to be engaged, with Low-Cost Carrier Wizz Air planning to join the party at the airport with two new services.

The low-cost carrier will initially start with a daily service to Sofia, and the ramping up its routes with a daily service to Budapest.

Let’s look at the two services.

Sofia is first out of the traps, with a daily service to Frankfurt, starting 22nd May 2017:

W64329 DEPART SOF 12:35 ARRIVE FRA 14:00
W64330 DEPART FRA 14:40 ARRIVE SOF 18:05

Commences 22nd May 2017
Booked Equipment: Airbus A320

With Budapest, this service will start in mid-December – the perfect time to hit a Christmas market.

W62311 DEPART BUD 14:50 ARRIVE 16:35
W62312 DEPART FRA 17:15 ARRIVE 18:45

Commences 15th December 2017
Booked Equipment: Airbus A320

So, this isn’t the biggest operation in the world to Frankfurt – but it’s a sign for Lufthansa to be aware. Ryanair is preparing to launch operations to at the airport, and now Wizz Air is about to join them.

The low-cost carriers are coming to Frankfurt-am-Main, and are looking beyond their traditional home of Frankfurt Hann, and closing in on the traditional hub of Lufthansa.

Somewhere, someone at Lufthansa may have to pull Eurowings in to help – especially if more low-cost carriers come sniffing around. But what price will that be? Which routes will be ‘winged?

There’s plenty of questions here… and right now, Lufthansa will soon have to find some answers.
