WOW adds Reykjavik to Chicago – and more capacity over the pond

28/03/2017 by Kevincm

WOW Air’s network growth continues apace, with the planned launch of a Reykjavik to Chicago O’Hare service from July 2017 onwards

The service will be starting from the 13th June 2017, operating four times a week between Reykjavik  to Chicago O’Hare.

The timetable looks a bit like this

WW153 DEPART KEF 15:00 ARRIVE ORD 16:40 Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays
WW154 DEPART ORD 17:40 ARRIVE KEF 05:00+1 Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Commences 13th June 2017
Booked Equipment: Airbus A321

Editors sidenote: Whenever I see the WW flight code, my memory goes back to BMI Baby who used to hold this code. Sigh – Happy days

This will be WOW Air’s 10th North American destination – with the airline currently serving Boston
Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington DC.

WOW is pushing the new destination through it’s online magazine.

And once again, the question of more capacity over the Atlantic rears its ugly head. People will head to WOW Air, tempted by the low fares (and buying up for things like luggage, seat, etc).

The move will add another 800 seats each way between Reykjavik to Chicago. That’s still a lot of seats to fill a week.

And those people filling seats have to come from somewhere more importantly. If these are new customers, this is actually good – more people flying in the skies is not too bad. If these customers however are being diverted from other airlines, someone else has to fill those seats vacated (or the airlines fly empty – an airline accountants worst nightmare)

Are we heading to a capacity glut soon that will require re-balancing of how airlines look at their long-haul services?

Maybe.

For now, enjoy the cheap fares. Just remember to price out everything before you hit confirm, and double-check it isn’t more expensive than flying a legacy carrier.
