Norwegian is continue painting its planes with famous people. This time, they’ve chosen to honour their own industry – and one of the pioneers of low-cost air travel – Sir Freddie Laker.

Sir Freddie Laker will be fittingly be first figure to painted on one of the first Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, launching the new routes between UK and Ireland to the USA.
Why so fittingly? Sir Freddie took on the majors of the day with Laker Airways and it’s Skytrain service, taking to the air in September 1977, offering fares from London Gatwick to New York JFK from £59.
You can guess how much that annoyed British Caledonian of the time who were deemed to be the “second force” to British Airways.
Whilst Laker Airways went bankrupt in 1982 – it opened the Pandora’s box of cheap air fares.
With the groundwork Sir Freddie carried out – the template for the low-cost carrier was born. The breaking of old agreements, liberalisation of access and access to tickets is something we take advantage of today.
Sir Freddie has not been forgotten by the industry – who has been celebrated by Air Asia X (who named their first A330 after him) Virgin Atlantic (who named a Boeing 747) and of course – The Freddie Awards.
There’s some great articles about Sir Freddie Laker and Skytrain – as well as a tribute on the Freddie Awards.
Norwegian has been adding notable famous British persons to its tales – author Roald Dahl and aviation pioneer. Sir Freddie Laker will be the third famous British person to get a tail painted on their plane.
And it’s a fitting tribute with Norwegian planning to launch new services with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft using the low-cost model.
