Things might be a little quiet this weekend (The joy of SSD upgrades)

29/04/2017 by Kevincm

As we head into the May Bank Holiday weekend, I’m talking a chance to do some surgery at Economy Class and Beyond.

Namely: the hard disk in my MacBook Pro 13 is getting replaced over the weekend.

Why? Let’s just say more than once during my last trip to the USA, it felt like the spinning tin drive (which I got when I purchased the MacBook Pro 13 in 2014) was about to let go in a nasty way (either the excessive heat from the HDD or some of the noises it was starting to make were – frankly – scaring me.

So this weekend is dedicated to bringing this on-line.

SSD Upgrade time
Yes. It’s a solid state hard disk (a SSD). I’m finally dragging myself into the mid-2015s at last with this MacBook Pro.

Thankfully the job doesn’t look that difficult if I’m working through the instructions on iFixit on how to fit hard disks and SSD’s)

Providing I don’t screw it up totally… which has happened on the past (what.. you’ve never inserted a processor in a socket with the wrong alignment in with your life and seen the electrical blue smoke? You’ve never lived), the MacBook Pro should be back on-line tonight.

However, some data is going to be in the wrong place for quite a few days – and as such, posts might be delayed whilst I scramble around trying to find my SATA to USB bridge (or copying images back from the file server).

So, please hang on over the next days… because if my luck runs as it normally does….

…And if thing go badly… well… I’ll be on the Lenovo Thinkpad for some time to come..

Just get a SATA to USB cable and first clone the drive and then switch.

The state of the old installation was getting… well… three years in of me not looking after my Mac as well as I should had.

Sometimes, starting again is never a bad thing in the world. Especlly as I don’t tend to hit the nucular option on the MacBooks.

PCs? Gimme the blitz button in a second.

Well, I’m sure there’s an app for a quick and painless transfer as well.
SATA to USB cable are pretty cheap and it’s nice to have one handy. I reckon you’re going to need to one to get the data transferred to a new Mac/PC when you get it (as it probably won’t have a sata port anymore).
Or you can just get an external USB enclosure and have the old drive as somewhat risky backup.

So worth the time, cost, and hassle. I wish I could help you out. Best of luck!

It’s a tough one to do, but it looks like after 4 hours of hard work and data copy, the laptop is back up and running.

Everything is slowly coming back to normal. But I’ll discover what I missed in the next few days I suspect…

That’s great to hear! That old laptop should fly now, right? No pun intended of course 🙂

Yeah definitely keep your old HDD on hand, and perhaps consider investing in a USB HDD enclosure too so you have access to the old data. And after you confirm you’ve got all you need to keep off that, reformat it and reuse it as a Time Machine backup drive.
