The last of the Middle East Three have been approved to allow passengers to carry large electronic devices, with Qatar Airways/Doha Airport getting the green light from US Department of Homeland security.
The airline states:
Qatar Airways is pleased to confirm that with immediate effect, all personal electronic devices can be carried on board all departures from Hamad International Airport, Doha, to destinations in the United States.
Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport have met with all requirements of the US Department of Homeland Security’s new security guidelines and we would like to express our thanks to the US and local authorities for their support during this process.
We would also like to thank our loyal passengers for their understanding and patience while the ban has been in place
Currently, Eithad, Turkish Airlines, Emirates and now Qatar have cleared the large electronics in the cabin ban (including such items as laptops, tablets and cameras).
This leaves Saudia (who are working to clear the ban), Royal Jordan, Egyptair, Kuwait Airways and Royal Air Maroc still to clear the ban.
For passengers – it’s an important sign – the sign than things are slowly returning to a sense of normality, and that they can travel without worrying about their electronics in the hold.
For airlines too, this is a good thing – the electronic devices are back in the cabin – so if a battery decides to have a thermal runaway, the cabin crew can stop it – rather than it going uncontrolled in the hold….
