A new Tube Map – for those who suffer with claustrophobia (or don’t like tunnels)

09/07/2017 by Kevincm

The London Underground sometimes isn’t the most pleasant place to be – least of all when it’s peak hour, with people crammed in tight.

For those who suffer with claustrophobia or other anxiety conditions – its even worse.

For those who suffer, or need to plan in advanced, Transport for London have released a new map – one that shows all the tunnels on it.

The new map can be viewed here or at http://content.tfl.gov.uk/tube-map-with-tunnels.pdf  The main difference of the map is are the lines highlighted in grey – indicating these are areas that are underground.

About 45% Underground network itself is underground – with vast sections of the Metropolitan, Central, District, London Overground and  Docklands Light Railway overground.

Nicky Lidbetter, Chief Executive from Anxiety UK, welcomes the map, stating

“For those with anxiety conditions such as panic attacks and claustrophobia, we know that travel by the underground can be problematic and challenging. This new map is an excellent resource for those wishing to avoid journeys where there are tunnels; serving as a great pre-journey planning aid and increasing access to public transport. I sincerely hope that the map will encourage those with claustrophobia and/or panic attacks who have previously avoided this form of public transport out of fear, to re-consider their use of the Tube”.

For those who suffer from claustrophobia, this could be useful for those who want to plan their journey, and switch to other modes of transport (such as London Buses or the Bike Rental Scheme).

And if it makes transport more inclusive and easier for anyone to use – all the better.
