airberlin adds new long haul routes to Chicago and Toronto

01/08/2017 by Kevincm

airberlin is continuing its long haul push (and trying to ignore the short haul problems at home), with the announcement of two new routes yesterday out of Dusseldorf, connecting Chicago and Toronto.

The airline will add the routes for Summer 2018.

Lets look a the Chicago route that will operate a five times a week frequency

In total, an extra 9 transatlantic flights will be added to the Air Berlin’s Dusseldorf hub (and thus alleviate the pain of Berlin Tegel Airport).

This makes for a total of 57 transatlantic flights a week from its North Rhine-Westphalia hub

airberlin CCO Götz Ahmelmann on the launch states:

“We are writing the first chapter in the new airberlin’s success story. We now have three additional long-haul aircraft in our fleet. We are already the largest provider of US flights in North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. And we will continue to expand. Supplementing the US programme with additional flights to Canada is the next step on the road to success.”

Air Berlin operate two-class configuration, made up of

  • 19 Business Class seats
  • 44 Extra Legroom Economy Seats
  • 227 Economy Seats

It’s an interesting move seeing airberlin do this – trying to shore up and expand their long haul operation out of Dusseldorf, rather than relying on Berlin for this expansion.

None the less, booking is now open on these flights. And remember – these as airberlin is a oneworld member – you can redeem frequent flyer currencies such as Avios, AAdvatage Miles, etc for reward flights too.

I’m actually pretty excited to see that YYZ and DUS are now connected. Lately I’ve seen quite a few good deals to Africa and East Asia out of DUS and it’ll be great to take advantage of these. I just wish it would commence earlier!
