Expensive train journeys: The Arlanda Express

24/08/2017 by Kevincm

In the past, I’ve stated Heathrow Express is plain expensive way to get from an airport to a city. Well, I think I’ve found a new candidate: step forward the Arlanda Express.

Arlanda Express connects the  Stockholm Arlanda’s airport terminals to Central Stockholm in 20 minutes or so – but the prices can be eye watering on the day.

For those who have the money, it’s SEK 280 one way or SEK 580 return.

Put those numbers into xe.com in a currency of your choice and scream loudly.

Thankfully, there are ways to cut the costs on the Arlanda Express, but in some cases – it takes planning

  • Buy in advance: one way tickets drop like a stone when buying in advanced – and these are significant savings over list:
    • 90-day advance purchase: SEK 154
    • 30-day advance purchase:  SEK 196
    • 14-day advance purchase:  SEK 252
  • If you’re day tripping in Stockholm, there is another option – and that’s the to buy a six-hour return ticket for SEK 340.

There is also the commuter train service – taking up to 43 minutes which is about SEK340, and the bus which is SEK 198 return, SEK 99 when booking online

But if Stockholm is in your future – make sure you leave some pennies behind.

It’s making Japan look cheap in some respects…

An Uber is the 2nd cheapest way to go from ARN to downtown Stockholm. The cheapest is the Arlanda Express bus. The last stop is the main train station in the middle of Stockholm.

    Yep, very true.
Have you seen the price of public transport in Stockholm?

Is there a typo there? If not, why would anyone buy a return that’s SEK 20 more than two singles?

But yup, SEK 280 trumps the HEX for cost.

If travelling in a group of two or more then https://doortogate.se/en/ is a great option. We paid 339 SEK total for two of us and got us to the door of our hotel.
