If you’ve visited the UK in the past (or are living in the UK), you’ll remember the Pound Coin as being round. Well.. it’s been a fair few months since the new 12-sided £1 coin has been out.
And it’s time for the old one to be withdrawn from circulation
From the 23:59 15th October, the round pound coins these cease to be legal tender in the United Kingdom.
One of these pound coins is not like the others, One of these things just doesn’t belong…. (hint – it’s the round coin on the top).
However, there’s a chance you will get some as change still (I got two today when going shopping earlier).
An estimated 450 million coins are still out there – and whilst some are collectors items, others are just worth… well… a pound.
If you’re in the UK currently the advice is spend them or bank them this weekend. Banks will accept them past the 15th October for deposits, and some shops will continue to accept them for a short while after the coins cease to be legal tender.
If you’re coming into the UK in the next week, you should be able to spend them still. Beyond that point, you’ll either need to:
- Pop into a bank to swap them (if the bank will swap them)
- Head over to Post office and try and swap them there
- Pop the in donation boxes
You can find out more about the changeover at https://www.thenewpoundcoin.com/. But if you have round pound coins – the time to spend them is now…
