Whilst some are choosing to look at Finnairs refreshed Business Class, I’m choosing a different tack. Why? Since when did I play by the book?
Rather, I’m looking at passenger experience from a different angle, with Finnair working together with the Moomins.

Finnair will be re-vamping it’s family travel offering, with the Moomins joining in during various segments of travel.
The Finnish airline Finnair, has today announced that it is renewing its concept for family travel, which will include the Moomins in various segments of its customer journey for families travelling with Finnair! ✈️✨🙌 @feelfinnair #finnair #finnairpr… https://t.co/JCZ9woqPQ2 pic.twitter.com/DGGUIy9cTN

So what are Finnair promising? Quite a lot it seems . According to the airline:
- Kids travelling with Finnair will be able to use a special Moomin check-in counter and children’s security control.
- Kids will receive a Moomin-themed magic ticket, luggage tag and a giveaway on-board the aircraft.
- The in-flight entertainment system will have the Moomin animation series added to it.
- For families travelling with infants, a Moomin Finlayson towel for infants will be given as a gift (I covered this before… and it’s a great idea).
- Children travelling in Business Class will receive an exclusive Moomin amenity kit.
So, we can see this is a similar to the Hello Kitty concept that EVA Air has been flying for some time, but focused much more at family and children level as opposed to painting whole planes (although this has been done in the past…)
The ideas behind child-friendly check in, security, on-board services targeting both infants and children should hopefully make a them happier when travelling.
And that might include the adults too.
Piia Karhu, Senior Vice President, Customer Experience at Finnair states:
“We are very happy to extend our collaboration with Moomin Characters Ltd. for our new family concept,”
“The Moomin brand is one of the most popular Finnish exports around the world and we are thrilled to have it included in our customer journey for kids. Travelling with children is a growing segment and we want to provide our little customers with the best possible experience.”
Finnair will be rolling out the new Family Travel concept with Moomins during the first half of 2018.
But what’s the big deal about Moomins I hear you ask? Shame on you. They’re beloved characters from Finland. Have a look at the Wiki entry. Those of a certain age group (your author included – who watched it when he was mean to be revising for exams) will remember the TV Series better.
But to make the passenger experience better for families as they travel is no bad thing at all – if it ease a tantrum, or inspires wonder in a child’s eyes, it can only be a good thing.
That, and the after-market on those Moomin Amenity kits will be high…
