Primera Air shelves its Birmingham to Boston Route

29/01/2018 by Kevincm

A couple of weeks ago, I examined the upcoming launch of Primera Air and it’s planned operation out of Birmingham

Well, it seems that operation is being sliced by a third, with the Boston route being suspended before the first flight.

Primera Air - No Boston route from Birmingham
Primera Air’s site – note Boston is missing.

Economy Class and Beyond reached out to Primeira Air in regards to the change. In a statement – the airline said:

Primera Air has reviewed its flight schedule from the Birmingham airport due to changing passenger flow trends.
While we see very strong passenger numbers for flights to Toronto and New York, unfortunately the Boston route shows weakest results.

So, the airline can’t seem to make the numbers work between Birmingham and Boston, but Toronto and New York

The airline goes on to say

For this reason Primera Air is revising the transatlantic schedule out of Birmingham airport. This will also affect service to New York as of June 23 the frequency will be decreased to 4 flights per week.

Looking at this carefully – it seems Primera Air is going in strong with a daily service, then slicing it back to a Monday, Wednesday , Friday and Sunday operation.

In terms of those holding bookings, the airline states

All passengers with existing bookings are being contacted and offered alternative flights or refunds and we apologize to those passengers affected.

In particular, Boston passengers offered flights on Primera Air from Stansted, as well as options on other airlines.

If you have bookings with Primeria Air between Birmingham and Boston, and Birmingham and Newark after 23rd June – now is the time to check for options.

The airline’s expansion at Birmingham (it being a new base) is one of the biggest, with transatlantic routes and holiday routes being the planned growth of the airline from the airport.

The Boston mis-step hopefully will be the only one for the airline as it tries to build a base at Birmingham.

And hopefully, a seven-day a week service to New York can flourish again at a later point.
