In news that should shock… exactly no-one, Lufthansa Group have confirmed they are to offer “Light” fares from Europe to North America.

As you can expect for a Light fare, it’s a Hand Baggage Only Fare. Expect no ticket flexibility with it.
If you want comforts like an advanced assigned seat, or a hold luggage item, these will be an additional purchase. Thankfully, like most of the legacy light/lite/low fare options, on-board comforts like meals, drinks and other comforts will be included (save the usual’s like in-flight Wi-Fi, etc).
If you didn’t pay to assign a seat – one will be assigned at check-in.
This will be offered across the Lufthansa Group airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, and Swiss.
Lufthansa has been testing the concept since October 2017 on routes between Scandinavia and North America, with passengers at the lowest end of the fare scale being able to buy flights with carry-on luggage only.
With 8kg of hand luggage, Lufthansa does offer less hand luggage than some IAG airlines – but if you’re packing efficiently, it should provide some capacity. Just don’t do a shopping spree whilst travelling – or you’ll be wishing you paid a bit more for a slightly higher cost ticket which included luggage on your homeward bound segments…
