Qatar Airways are continuing to break new ground with their Boeing 787-8 fleet, with the announcement the airline is to serve Gothenburg in Sweden.
This will be the 5th Nordic airport that Qatar Airways will serve, and the second in Sweden (with the primary destination being Stockholm Arlanda) from the 12th December 2018.

On the launch, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker stated
“It is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of direct services to Gothenburg, our second gateway into Sweden. Gothenburg is a charming city with much to offer both business and leisure travellers. This new direct route demonstrates our commitment to expanding our presence in the Nordic countries, a highly important market for us, and to further connecting these destinations on our global network. We look forward to introducing travellers from around the world to this beautiful city.”
Mr. Jonas Abrahamsson, Chief Executive Officer at Swedavia (operator of Gothenburg airport) added:
“Sweden is the largest economy in Scandinavia, and at the moment it is also the strongest in Europe. New direct routes are an important contributing factor, as they improve connectivity to markets that are crucial to the Swedish business community and attract capital and knowledge to the region. This direct route is the result of successful cooperation where we, together with the region, have shown Qatar Airways the potential in the western Swedish market. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that Swedavia and western Sweden jointly welcome this large Middle East airline to Gothenburg Landvetter Airport.”
Qatar Airways also use a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on its Doha to Stockholm route – a route I’ve done a little travel on. You can find out what the passenger experience is like heading out of Stockholm in Business Class, inbound to Stockholm in business Class, and between Doha and Tokyo in Economy Class
It’s an interesting route addition, as Qatar Airways looks beyond the traditional hub airports for new traffic.
Now, if Qatar Airways could have a reasonable business class sale too, we’d all be going to Gothenburg…
