In a route that will have some people scratching their head, British Airways are launching a new route to Charleston, SC.

The route will run from 4th April 2019 to 29th October 2019 as part of the Transatlantic Joint Venture agreement. The airline will offer two flights a week based on the following timetable
BA221 DEPART LHR 17:20 ARRIVE CHS 21:20 BA220DEPART CHS 22:50 ARRIVE LHR 11:50+1 Operates from 4th April 2019 to 29th October 2019 Operates Thursday and Sunday only in both directions Booked Equipment: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Data: British Airways
The press blurb is rather faint, with Sean Doyle, British Airways’ Director of Network and Alliances, stating
“You can’t help but get sucked in to the old-world charm of Charleston; its cobblestone streets, colourful houses and historical buildings make it a unique city. Recently we launched flights to Nashville and New Orleans and earlier this year announced a new route to Pittsburgh. Travelling to the states is as popular as ever, so we’re really pleased to be adding this charming city to our extensive global network and giving customers even more choice of holiday destinations.”
Whilst it is a summer only route, there is an aviation angle to this. Boeing is setting up a training shop in Sheffield. What’s assembled in Charleston SC? That’s right – Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
No coincidence at all is it?
Lead in prices depend on class of service, with World Traveller Plus starting at a rather high £600 return, World Traveller Plus being better value at £928, and if you’re on an expense account Club World at £1920. Booking on these services start Friday 19th October.
This will be Charleston’s first transatlantic service – with the rest of the service pattern looking… a bit barren, with a mixture of regional and mainline services operated by the big three US based airlines and the usual LCC suspects.
An interesting addition – but I suspect it’ll be a very fancy corporate shuttle, with room for extra passengers who BA can carry.
