For those in the dark, the new Ryanair Luggage allowances go live today. Let’s go through the new live policy – and translate Ryanair into English
Ryanair Boeing 737-800 landing at Dublin Airport. Luggage landing fee extra – Image, Economy Class and Beyond.
What everyone can bring aboard (without paying anything extra)
1 x item at which must fit under the seat in front of you. Sized at 40cm x 20cm x 25cm Maximum.
This includes handbags, laptop bags, small rucksacks and so on.
Who can bring Two bags aboard the plane?
Those who have brought any of the following can bring two bags aboard the passenger cabin of a plane
- “Priority & 2 Cabin Bags” (starting at €/£6 and upwards)
- Plus Ticket holders
- Flexi Ticker Holders
- Family Ticket holders
- Connecting flight ticket holders
These passengers can bring 1 additional 10kg bag on board which must fit into the baggage sizer at the gate. Bags must measure 55cm x 40cm x 20cm or less.
What if I have a trolley bag and not in the categories above?
Bluntly put – Pay up. You’ll need to pay to take the second bag aboard as a checked item.
Get used to seeing one of these too if you need to check a 10kg bag – Image, Economy Class and Beyond
This again is sized at 55cm x 40cm x 20cm with a maximum weight of 10kg.
It’ll cost:
- €/£8 if purchased when you booked your flight
- €/£10 if added online after booking (Via the Ryanair Manage my Booking tool)
- €/£20 at the baggage drop desk
- €/£25 at the boarding gate
If you try to skip the check-in line and present your bag at the gate, and it doesn’t fit in the sizer, you’ll wind up paying a gate bag fee of €/£25 – and your bag will be tagged and chucked in the belly of the plane – to be claimed at the luggage belt on arrival at your destination.
There is guidance from Ryanair on the new policy, with an annoying video.

Those who prefer the written form can check this for the new policy for non-priority passengers and this for priority passengers.
It’s the second time Ryanair have played around with luggage allowances, with the airline wanting to decrease boarding/disembarkation times – and it seems the gate checking of out-of-size bags wasn’t working for them.
None the less, if you are flying Ryanair soon – expect some delays as passengers get used to the new policy.
Because this policy change is going to throw a LOT of people.
