To Fly, To Sleigh – British Airways lines up festive IFE options and food

13/12/2018 by Kevincm

As we race into the festive season, British Airways is launching a selection of seasonal IFE (in-flight entertainment) content on its long haul services.

According to the airline, up to Up to 40 new films, TV show episodes, audio books and music CDs have been introduced under the ‘Festive Cheer’ category.

Content is split, with films featured, including ‘The Holiday’ and ‘Elf’, ‘Gremlins’, ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’, ‘Scrooged’ and ‘Miracle on 34th Street’.

In terms of TV programmes, its a distinctively British taste, with classics programmes including ‘The Vicar of Dibley Christmas Special’ and ‘Nigella: At My Table Christmas Special 2017’.

Those who want music to will have carols from The Choir of King’s College Cambridge in the music selection.

British Airways are also promising changes to in-flight catering too, with the airline planning to serve Christmas meals at 38,000ft on long haul services – which no doubt will bring some catering delight for those trying to escape cooking turkey…

Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ Director of Brand and Customer Experience, said:

“The festive season is a special time for customers and this new channel should help them to feel particularly Christmassy on our flights. Alongside popular film favourites, we’ve also got hilarious comedy, interesting documentaries, and rousing carols. There is something for everyone.”

Content remains the key in an IFE system

In the release, British Airways notes that they’re investing in new IFE systems on its Gatwick Boeing 777 fleet, with the installation of Panasonic eX3 IFE systems. And it’s welcome compared to the classic Rockwell Collins IFE system that still persists in its 747/777 fleet.

However, no matter how shiny and new an IFE system is, it must be backed up with appropriate content. Seasonal content is a good start, and with the newer systems able to store content including over 1000 programmes and movies.

And keeping a strong and curated selection is key in delivering a strong IFE product.
