The joys of delays and paperwork… and EC261

27/03/2019 by Kevincm

Good afternoon from 36,000ft as I trek between London and Chicago.

Well, except I should be a lot closer to Chicago than I am as I write this.

It’s been a fun morning to say the least, with the plane that was due to take me over to the USA being pulled for maintenance work.

As I boarded the aircraft, I was handed a lovely little leaflet

So with a maintenance delay.. what can I get?

A fair bit it seems, with American Airlines EC261/2006 paperwork

And the detail we’re interested in today, which handles delays.

Originally, AA87 was due to push back at 08:45GMT. We didn’t make pushback until 13:23. That puts me at 4 hours and 38 minutes behind from pushback.

What the actual arrival times will be is another matter – and what will matter when I lodge my EC261 claim.

But at least American Airlines have been proactive enough to remind me of my rights.

All I’ve got to do is e-mail the claim in when I get time.

And when I get the final block to block times.

Although reading around, I’m in for a whole new world of pain in regards to that…

My process was actually straightforward. Keep your boarding pass (or a screenshot of mobile pass) and if you get an auto-emailed compensation offer, do not accept it until you’ve gotten the EC 261 cash. The fact that they are proactively offering you your rights is a good sign toward quick approval.

What tools do you use to determine actual and scheduled arrival and departure times?

I’ll be using the public timetable for the flight, and Flightradar24 to do the numbers. Going to be a bit of night
