Herein is a warning about things that don’t go together.
For example:
- Old seats and 29″ seat pitches
- Low Cost Airlines and Free Food
- Airport security and densely packed bags
- AMD and Intel Optane memory
- Grammarly and Microsoft Word’s Grammar checkers fighting each other.
I’d like to add a new one to this – Espresso with Tonic Water.
Yes. You read that line right.
Caffe Nero is currently offering this with two options in the UK:
- Espresso with Fever-Tree Tonic Water (£3.75)
- Espresso with Ginger Fever-Tree Tonic Water (£3.85)
Note, Regional pricing may vary
I had… well. Indeterminate thoughts about it when I saw this Saturday.
By Sunday I was more than curious how it could be.
And I wish I didn’t and walked past.
Sparking and Caffeine. We know this works with cola… but with coffee… I’m honestly not sure. But that wasn’t the worst part – it was the taste.
The tastes honestly didn’t blend well. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I didn’t expect to taste a bit like vomit.
Caffe Nero suggests this blend is
“light and refreshing Fever-Tree tonic water is first poured over ice and topped with a double shot of our signature espresso.”
Whilst I do like their espresso, this combination does not work.
And yes, it blends down.
This was a challenge to finish. But at £3.75, I was going to finish this thing.
Please. If you see this in the shops (with at least Caffe Nero’s in Heathrow Terminal 2, 3 and 5), run a mile away from it. Have an iced coffee, have a hot coffee… but this isn’t refreshing.
It tastes AWFUL.
If however you need an expensive joke for “friends” who think tonic and coffee go great together, you can find out more at https://caffenero.com/uk/coffee-infusions/

Espresso and tonic quinine both affect the same taste receptors in the mouth. They are actually quite complimentary from a taste science point of view. Might be a poor tonic choice or bias on your part.

Or it didn’t combine well. It just didn’t taste right to me. Good thing we’re all different.

Sounds gross.
It’s like coming up with a pizza that has Pickled Pigs Feet and Pineapple on it. Sure it might make some sort of sense to someone but doesn’t mean it’s a good idea in reality.

I had one recently at Counterpoint Coffee in Seaside, Ca (near Monterey). I thought it was amazingly refreshing—this mix would go great on a hot summer day. I mixed mine immediately after appreciating the aesthetics of its presentation. I think you need to give it another try.

I tried one of these today – I enjoy Cafe Nero’s espresso but this was utterly revolting. Mine had a noticeable scum of coffee oils at the top like the one in your photo. Usually a bad sign I think…

I just saw these advertised and wondered if I’d be brave enough to ever order one. Thanks for the warning!
