Lufthansa to move more Airbus A380s to Munich

09/07/2019 by Kevincm

It seems the Lufthansa Airbus A380 fleet is on the move, with another two aircraft moving from Frankfurt to Munich.

The A380s will join the Munich based fleet for the Summer 2020 season – with the base operating the half of the Lufthansa A380 fleet (seven aircraft ). The remainder will remain based at Frankfurt.

As a result, Lufthansa will operate them on transatlantic routes to Boston an San Francisco.

In addition, the Summer 2020 timetable will see Los Angeles, Beijing and Shanghai as options available from Munich.

Currently, Lufthansa operates the Airbus A380 from Munich to Los Angeles, Beijing and Hong Kong. In the upcoming 2019/2020 Winter Schedule, the type will operate to San Francisco, Miami and Hong Kong (until December 2019) as well as Shanghai (as of January 2020).

In quotes

Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG said:

“Since last March, the A380 has been operating very successfully from Munich. A few weeks ago, we welcomed the millionth A380 passenger on board in Munich. Our customers and our crews love the A380 experience. The flagship of our fleet is perfect for our 5-Star hub Munich. We will continue growing where quality and costs go hand in hand,”

Another Munich win

Munich has done well out of Frankfurt Airport, with Lufthansa moving more high capacity flights away from Lufthansa’s traditional hub.

For passengers as well, it’s a win as navigating Munich Airport is a lot easier than navigating the maze that is Frankfurt, with well-defined gates system and Schengen entry/exit point.

Or to put it another way, if I had a connection at Munich that was 40 minutes or so – I woundn’t hesitate to book it.

If it was Frankfurt airport – that would be a totally different answer…

Great to see this being introduced to Boston. Most of us here (in BOS) felt that if LH were to bring the plane to Boston, it would be as an upgrade to the Frankfurt 747-8. This is great for the reasons you state: transiting MUC is much less stressful than FRA.

    Can’t wait to see it.

On a related matter, how many A380s are in the new paint? Just one?

Ive done a post red-eye transit at Frankfurt after coming back from BOS… it wasn’t fun with the Frankfurt Airport maze. Going via MUC should be a lot better.

In terms of A380: I’ve lost count. There’s a few out there, but let’s be honest – the blue and yellow is far more interesting;)
