Swiss grounds their A220 fleet for engine checks

15/10/2019 by Kevincm

Earlier this afternoon, the Swiss International Air Lines short-haul timetable was thrown into disarray as the Airbus A220 fleet is pulled from service to allow for engine checks.

In it’s advisory the airline states:

The ongoing technical inspections of several aircraft will restrict our flight operations. As a result many flights will be cancelled.

The airline’s Twitter feed reveals more, both in announcement and what’s happened

SWISS has decided to conduct engine inspections for its entire C Series fleet. This means that all SWISS C Series aircraft will undergo an extensive examination from today onwards. Only following a faultless inspection will these aircraft be returned to regular flight duties.

Check before you fly

Swiss operates a fleet of 20 Airbus A220-100 and 9 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. As such that’s a lump of the short-haul operation that Swiss flies both out of Geneva (the primary A220 hub) and Zurich (it’s main long haul hub).

They are all powered twin Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines.

Whilst there are a number of Airbus short-haul aircraft that can assist, they will mostly be committed to current operations.

Check before you fly with Swiss for short-notice cancellations. If your flight is cancelled, rebooking and refund options are available to you.

It’s also a given that services will take time to recover, and that tomorrows timetable and operations could well be subject to change.
