Lufthansa is expanding its Air-Rail connectivity through it’s Express Rail Brand, adding through rail ticketing and protection if something goes amiss.
ICE Trains at Frankfurt Haptbhanhof – Image, Economy Class and Beyond.
Frankfurt Airport will gain connections to Aachen, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart and Ulm. This is in addition to Dortmund, Göttingen, Kassel, Erfurt, Würzburg, Nuremberg, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Mannheim
The new services will be offered from mid-December (when the Deutsche Bahn timetable changes), using ICE services.
Express Rail is turning to be important, with 119 services to be offered from Frankfurt Airport (up from 77), whilst Düsseldorf will gain 105 services a week (“doubled”). Meanwhile, Stuttgart will be able to use 77 connections a week going forward,
The new trains are available for booking today.
So why book Lufthansa Express Rail? There is something quite important with this product – if the train or flight is unexpectedly delayed, Lufthansa will rebook the passengers free of charge.
For those who collect Miles & More miles, you will earn mileage credit too. Business Class passengers travel in the First Class of Deutsche Bahn and have access to the DB lounges.
In quotes
Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG:
“Easy booking, easy transfers and a direct connection to the world. We are committed to an efficient and sustainable networking of the various modes of transport. This doesn’t just benefit our customers, it is also good for the environment. The more reliable, attractive and efficient the connection of airports to the ICE network is, the more passengers can begin their journey by rail.”
Addressing a mobility gap
Whilst the “Flight-Shaming” concept is still an important force, there is a great opportunity for multi-modal connectivity – using airlines for the long haul flights and trains for high-speed connectivity within regional destinations is a sound methodology.
By adding in further protection in case a connection missed, it gives reassurance the passenger won’t be left stranded by a delayed train or aircraft
