American Airlines Shutters its lounges

26/03/2020 by Kevincm

With the aim of keeping gatherings of people down to the minimum, American Airlines are to temporarily close their Admiral Club lounges.

The airline is planning to close most of its Admirals Club lounges but will maintain front desk customer service at large U.S. airports and at London Heathrow Airport to provide travel support.

All services within the lounge will be suspended. This includes food, drink, showers and the lounge itself. The lounges will be closed primarily to reduce large gatherings.

The following lounges are highlighted as being closed, but having front desk services available to travellers.

  • Charlotte, Concourse C
  • Chicago, Concourse H/K
  • Dallas-Fort Worth, Terminals A, C and D
  • London Heathrow, Terminal 3
  • Los Angeles, Terminal 4
  • Miami, Gate D30
  • New York (JFK), Gate 12
  • New York (LGA), Concourse D
  • Philadelphia, Terminal B/C
  • Phoenix, Gate A7 and Gate A19
  • Washington (DCA), Terminal C

Kurt Stache, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience said

“American is committed to caring for customers through these unprecedented times. Customer and team member wellbeing is foremost in our minds,”

“As the travel mandates abate and the COVID-19 crisis subsides, we will explore how to manage annual membership benefits for impacted customers — including for those with a membership through the Citi / AAdvantage Executive card. We look forward to welcoming back our loyal members soon.”

Opinion – A Way of Being Socially Distant

Whilst travel has reduced to a trickle, the need for lounges is vanishing – making them an expensive thing to keep open.

However, they also provide a place for people to congregate in a time where social distancing – or at least being 2 metres apart from the next person is being practised in a lot of places around the world.

Alas, you won’t be able to be socially distant in the lounge but will have to try being two metres apart from someone in the terminal for now.
