If you think parking an aircraft, or a fleet of aircraft is a simple matter – Brussels Airlines would like you to think again.

With their grounding extended until 15th May 2020, the Brussels Airlines fleet is mostly parked at Brussels Airport (except for a few that are being used to assist in repatriation flights).
In terms of manpower, it takes time. The airline states storing an Airbus A330 takes about 400 man-hours, as the airline’s Maintenance & Engineering teams follow Airbus manufacturer instructions to make sure that the aircraft are stored safely.
All windows are taped to prevent sunlight from de-colouring the interior, landing gears and engines are thoroughly packed so that birds cannot nest in them and prevent corrosion.

Whilst you might think that’s it – and the engineers can walk away, an aircraft is very much “alive” and needs daily maintenance. For example, every day, for example, the wheels have to be turned just slightly, to make sure they don’t get worn out under the weight of the aircraft and every week, inspections and tests need to be performed.

Never knew the level of effort it takes to maintain parked aircraft. Thanks for sharing this!

Thank you for this. It’s always good to know what goes into the things we take for granted.
