Last Week at Economy Class and Beyond (12th April)

12/04/2020 by Kevincm

It’s been another week of twists and turns as airlines continue to react to COVID-19, as the aviation industry continues to react and try and works its way through the pain.

Welcome to Last Week at Economy Class and Beyond on this Easter Sunday.

From “Photos from my iPhone” – Sometimes in the real world, I’m busy and I don’t get time to write. Currently, I’m 50 monitors or so busy, getting things ready to head out to those who need them.

Loyalty

It seems North American airlines are scrambling to retain their members, with Delta kicking off the party, with United Airlines, Air Canada and Alaska Airlines offering status extensions

  • Delta Air Lines extends their premium status for a year – Delta kicks off the North American party
  • Air Canada extends elite status for members of their Altitude loyalty programme – And Air Canada extends this to a family member or friend.

Terminal Closures

Singapore Changi Airport prepares to suspend operations at Terminal 2 – Not even the great Singapore Changi can hide from this storm.

Fleet Parking

Lufthansa Group moves to park Airbus A380, Airbus A340-600 and Boeing 747-400 aircraft – Lufthansa moves to park over 40 aircraft… permanently.

Grounding extensions

  • Jet2 extends grounding to 17th June – Leisure carrier puts its flights on hold

Maintenance, re-purposing and to the future

  • airBaltic sets its path to the future – With airBlaltic mostly on the ground, it’s time to wave goodbye to some members of the fleet, as well as plan for a service restart.
  • Brussels Airlines shows how they’re resting their aircraft – Putting aircraft into hibernation is hard work as Brussels Airlines show
  • Air Canada configures three Boeing 777-300ER to carry more freight – Is it possible to remove 422 seats from a 777 and turn it into a frieghter? Yes, it is.

Cutting production

  • Airbus cuts aircraft production rates – cuts of a third inbound.

Pretty pictures

  • KLM Boeing 747-400M departing Chicago O’Hare International

Next week

With the twists and turns with COVID-19 and countries taking protective measures still, travel will be off the agenda for some time. However, there is plenty to play for, in terms of securing funding and building a future post pandemic.

We’ll be keeping an eye out as always.

For now, stay safe this Easter Weekend.
