Earlier this week, Heathrow Airport has begun to mothball terminals, with Terminal 3 (in the central terminal area) and Terminal 4 (on the South Western side of the airport) closing to passenger traffic.

For now, all traffic will either be handled in Terminal 2 (in the central terminal area) or Terminal 5 (to the west side of the airport).
In the first instance, the following airlines have moved from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2
- Cathay Pacific
- Emirates
- Pakistan International Airlines
Iran Air will join them from the 19th April, as other airlines are shifted around the airport. British Airways flights have all been consolidated to Terminal 5
Over the coming weeks, further moves will be made – so it’s important you continue to check www.heathrow.com/whichterminal where regular updates will appear over the coming weeks. It’s also worth checking with your airline if 1) your flight is operating and 2) which terminal it’s flying from too.
Meanwhile, in the terminals, you will find restaurants closed, with Boots and WHSmith being the retailers that are fully open.
Heathrow Airport makes the following note about the move
The significant reduction we are seeing in passenger traffic will ensure that passengers are able to continue to adhere to the government’s social distancing guidance even as the operation is consolidated. Consolidating our operations will also help us to protect long-term jobs at the airport by reducing our cost base.
With the airport also in single-runway operation (with runways switched once a week), there is a marked decline in passenger traffic – even though freight traffic is increasing as supplies are brought into the United Kingdom to help
Heathrow Airport has published an FAQ – which is worth a read if you’re needing to leave the United Kingdom or are planning to return to the country
