Last Week at Economy Class and Beyond (26th April)

26/04/2020 by Kevincm

It’s another week of COVID-19 as the aviation industry continues to adjust to life. Let’s see what I covered at Last Week at Economy Class and Beyond.

Mirrorball near one of the offices I work at currently – Yes, I’m out and about currently during the lockdown as my work demands it to support the front line.

Airline Collapses

Multiple airlines have failed this week, including

  • – Virgin Australia (filed for Bankruptcy protection)
  • Air Mauritius (filed for Voluntary Administration)
  • LGW (filed for German Insolvency)
  • Norwegian has had for its crew subsidiaries file for bankruptcy
  • CityJet have filed examinership – akin to bankruptcy protection

Consumer refunds

An (almost positive) IHG Refund experience… – they took their time, but the money arrived….

The Great Heathrow Shuffle

The Great Heathrow Shuffle Continues – More Airlines “move” home – with Terminal 3 now shuttered, it’s important to check before you travel which terminal you need to go to if you’re leaving or arriving into the UK

Onboard social distancing

Emirates introduces social distancing aboard their flights – even the greeat Emirates is adjusting its seating onboard its aircraft.

Fleet Shrinking

Austrian Airlines prepares to re-size its fleet – Farewell smaller and older aircraft.

Extra flights

Etihad announces extra flights from Abu Dhabi – More rescue and recovery flights for those who need them

Post COVID Recovery

Gatwick Airport estimates post COVID-19 traffic recovery – 36 to 48 months is a long time to recover

Boeing and Embraer Joint Venture is off

Boeing walks away from Embraer Joint Venture – Expect fireworks.

Next Week

With some airlines on the edge and others going cap in hand to governments for funding, its still a critical time for the aviation industry. We’ll be continuing to keep an eye out on changes in the industry as well as intiatives to bring a little normality in these uncertain times.

Until then – stay safe.
