Southampton Airport has suffered since the collapse of FlyBe and the ongoing COVID situation. However, there might be some cheer ahead as British Airways is setting up a summer schedule at the airport.
BA CityFlyer will be operating the services, flying from Southampton to destinations in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, France and Germany. The airline will operate up to 17 flights each weekend to 11 locations between 1 May and 31 October 2021. The seasonal arrangement will run alongside existing services from London City Airport and enhance British Airways’ UK regional network
It will serve the following destinations.
- Berlin, Germany
- Bergerac Dordogne Périgord, France
- Edinburgh, United Kingdom
- Faro, Portugal
- Florence, Italy
- Ibiza, Spain
- Limoges–Bellegarde, France
- Palma de Mallorca, Spain
- Malaga, Spain
- Mykonos, Spain
- Nice Côte d’Azur, France
As the flights are operated by BA CityFlyer, they will utilise Embraer E190 aircraft, configured in a 2-2 configuration.
Lead-in prices start at £66 each way, bookable at ba.com/southampton

Tom Stoddart, Managing Director of BA CityFlyer, which will operate the new services, said:
“We are delighted to announce the extension of our services to Southampton Airport next summer.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the British Airways family. The ideal location of the airport and excellent facilities on offer will hugely benefit our customers along the South Coast as they plan to take to the skies again and book a well-deserved holiday in the sun.”
Steve Szalay, Operations Director at Southampton Airport, said:
“Today’s announcement from British Airways is fantastic news for Southampton Airport and the region during what has been the most challenging of years.
“It’s also great to see BA return to the airport once again and the range of excellent destinations on offer is sure to be a welcome early Christmas present for passengers looking to plan a European holiday next summer.”
More Holiday connectivity for Southampton
Southampton Airport suffered a blow when FlyBe folded, where it had 95% of the traffic slice there. There are however signs of growth, with Aurigny, Blue Islands, Eastern Airways, KLM and Loganair stepping in to expand its connectivity. With both Blue Islands and Eastern Airways expanding their schedules in 2021 (when hopefully, there will be the genesis of recovery) and British Airways coming in for the Summer, there are signs of hope for the airport that needs its connectivity gap filling.
The challenge, of course, will be to expand these summer schedules into a normal timetable. Only full planes and paying customers can decide the future of British Airways routes
As well as the viability of the airport in the longer term.
