Review 2020: My (Limited) Travels

31/12/2020 by Kevincm

Welcome to the last part of Review 2020 at Economy Class and Beyond – This time focused on my travels. Or lack of them thereafter.

A year of cancellations

My trip list has ended mostly in the bin – like a lot of peoples did. Here’s a smattering of what ended up in the bin:

  • Hamburg for Aircraft Interiors Expo
  • Chicago (both in Spring and Autumn) to catch up with friends
  • Dublin (to catch up with friends)

As to what else I’ve missed… I honestly don’t know. All I know is that my backside has mostly been planted in the office this year.

One Trip Abroad

I made one trip aboard this year – and I consider that good going. I went to Germany. And saw planes. It made me happy.

A grand total of 954 miles flown. You can find the trip report here.

What other travels?

Before the Pandemic hit hard, I was in London for a day, taking Chiltern Railways, London Underground and the DLR to a photoshoot for a friend (and if you watch my Instagram or Twitter feed, I do drip-feed these photos).

I also spend a night in Nottingham for a break as well with a friend (in my bubble) to get a bit of sanity into both our lives.

My travels this year have been limited, as I’ve stayed close to Birmingham mostly. I did spend a month working in the Worcestershire and Herefordshire area (where I was doing the best part of 300 to 400 miles a week),

Loyalty – or lack of thereafter

My loyalty strategy has been… I’ll be honest – none at all. With opportunities dry (and me focusing on clearing debt, rather than taking out new cards), my loyalty earnings for 2020 are… well, interesting:

  • Accord: 128 Points
  • IHG: 862 Elite Points, 2155 spending points
  • Lufthansa Miles and More 1000 Status Miles, 427 Award Miles
  • Avios (British Airways) 7,200 Award Avios, 0 Tier Points

What does 2021 hold?

An honest answer is the best answer – and my honest answer is I don’t honestly know. We are some time from any normality coming (least of all, the recent restrictions placed on travellers from the United Kingdom have put more than several dents in my plans).

I’d like to get my travelling shoes back on, but there is a time and a place for that – and at the moment, the best thing I can do is wait things out, until they improve.

That and probably another 1000 laptops to build knowing my luck…
