It seems that Germans want to get away to the holiday sun, with Lufthansa responding by adding major capacity on a route – converting it from a narrow body Airbus to a Boeing 747-8i and an Airbus A350-900

Now that is what you call a capacity jump.
The airline is taking what it calls “extraordinary measures” to help with the demand between Frankfurt/Munich and Palma de Mallorca, with the airline reporting 25 times increase in bookings.
So how do you solve a problem like this? Deploy the big aircraft. Currently, Lufthansa utilises an Airbus A321 on these routes – capable of holding 215 people.

The airline will be operating a Boeing 747-8 from Frankfurt to Palma de Mallorca four Saturdays in a row during the upcoming summer vacation in Hesse from the 17th of July.
The first “Jumbo” flight, LH1152, will depart on Saturday 17 July at 10:20 and arrive at Palma de Mallorca airport at 12:25. The return flight, LH1153 will take place the same day at 14:25., arriving in Frankfurt at 16:45.
The flight will operate also on 24 July, 31 July, and 7 August with a Boeing 747-8i.
And as for the seat count – there is 364 seats, split down 88 Business/First Seats, and 276 Economy/Premium Economy seats – an uplift of 149 seats.
I’ve got a review of the Long Haul product here.

The A350 flight to Palma de Mallorca will take place at the start of the Bavarian summer vacations on Saturday 31 July. Departure from Munich is planned for 09:50. under flight number LH2658, arriving in Palma de Mallorca at 12:00. The return flight, LH2659, will take place the same day at 13:30 arriving in Munich at 15:35.
The A350 offers an uplift from a 215 A321 – with 293 seats, including 48 in Business Class and 245 in Economy Class (including Premium Economy) – an uplift of 78 extra seats
Again, I have a review of the A350 here in a slightly different configuration to normal.

One way of making your assets work
With a travel demand existing for people to get away to the sun, Lufthansa is responding – and with assets that either is resting between flights or can give a chance for their crews to train at the same time as delivering a commercial service
With the extra capacity, it is making the Lufthansa assets work – both their people and their aircraft.
And for holiday makers as well as those who have family out in Spain – a chance to relax and reconnect.
