As part of the promotion, British Airways are offering up to 50% bonuses on purchases of Avios. You’ll note the term up to.
We’ll they’ve got a little canny this time to convince you to buy more, tiering the bonuses:
- Between 1000 and 8000 Avios, you’ll get a 30% bonus
- Between 10,000 and 90,000 Avios purchased, you’ll get a 40% bonus
- Between 100,000 and 200,000 Avios purchased, you’ll get a 50% bonus

An offer like this has T&C’s. Some highlights include:
- The Purchaser can buy a maximum of 200,000 Avios in any one calendar year. We reserve the right to amend the maximum annual amount that can be bought at any time.
- Avios can only be bought in specified amounts, starting at a minimum of 1,000 Avios.
- The Purchaser will be able to spend Avios when they appear as credited in the Purchaser’s Executive Club account. There may be occasions where there is a delay of up to 3 working days in the Avios being credited to your account. If after this time you have not received your Avios, please let us know via the Contact Us form at the bottom of the Buy Avios page.
- The Purchaser must have at least one Avios in their Executive Club account in order to buy Avios. If the Purchaser has a balance of zero Avios, they will need to have collected or redeemed Avios in the past 36 months in order to buy Avios.
- You have the right to cancel contracts for the purchase of Avios within 14 days of purchase provided the Avios have not been used. To exercise the right to cancel the purchase of the Avios, you must select the refund option contained in your Buy Avios email confirmation. If you cancel, we will reimburse the entire payment up to 14 days after the day on which we were informed about your decision to cancel this contract.

Worth it?
Personally, I’m not a buyer of miles unless I’m targeting something very specific or for a good reason (such as when I got my TAP status match.
My advice still is very much in play if you do decide to buy Avios:
- Don’t buy Avios if you plan to use it as a retirement flying fund. The value of Avios only goes one way – and it isn’t up sadly.
- Only buy what you need – if you need to top your account off for a redemption
- Avoid buying speculatively – at the moment, with travel situations around the world being in a very high state of flux, you may find you’re spending more time cancelling trips than going on them
British Airways has improved the availability of Avios seats on flights which may play into your hands too.
