Finnair adds long haul routes out of Stockholm

09/07/2021 by Kevincm

It seems either Finnair is on the attack – or it has spare capacity to deploy, with the airline planning to launch long haul services out Stockholm Arlanda in Sweden – a good hour and a half away from its home of Helsinki Vantaa.

The airline plans to offer the following routes out of Stockholm Arlanda including:

  • Bangkok (Thailand)
  • Phuket (Thailand)
  • Miami (United States of America)

These operations will launch for FInnairs winter season of 2021/2022. The routes will utilise Finnair’s newest long-haul aircraft- the Airbus A350 in a 2.5 class configuration.

The planned operation to each includes:

  • Arlanda to Bangkok – From 22nd October 2021, this will operate five times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. From 28th November, the weekly frequencies will be increased to seven and flights are operated from Monday through Sunday until 22nd April  2022.
  • Arlanda to Phuket will operate on Sundays from 24th  October. An additional frequency will be added Thursday as of 4th November for Tuesdays as of 30th November. Flights to Phuket will be operated until 21st April 2022.
  • Arlanda to Miami will start with two weekly frequencies, on Wednesdays and Saturdays as of  23rd October. From 29th November, flights will be operated also on Monday and Friday until  22nd April 2022.

Finnair flies to Bangkok, Phuket and Miami also from its home base Helsinki Airport.

Ole Orvér, Chief Commercial Officer, Finnair said

“We are excited to meet the travel needs of our Swedish customers with a non-stop service from Arlanda to Thailand and Miami, which are among the top winter holiday destinations for Swedes”,

“The new flights will strengthen our offering in the Swedish market.”

Setting up shop in SAS’s front door

With airlines seeking to improve utilisation of their fleets, it seems Finnair thinks that they can make some easy pickings on the back of SAS, who have one of their major bases at Arlanda, whilst putting their aircraft to work on what must be a rather soft market in Finland.

We’ll have to see if passengers in Stockholm and beyond can be tempted with Finnair’s offerings.

Finnair flights from Arlanda to Thailand are now bookable through Finnair.com and to Miami also through travel agencies.
